What Is Tinea Versicolor?

Tinea versicolor, also known as pityriasis versicolor, is a common rash of the skin. It is caused by an overgrowth of malassezia, a yeast normally present on the skin. Risk factors include, warm and humid climates., oily skin, excessive sweating, weakened immune system and hormonal changes, such as those during adolescence.

Treatment Options

  • Topical antifungal creams, lotions, or shampoos containing active ingredients like ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, or ciclopirox are commonly effective.

    In severe cases or when topical treatments fail, oral antifungal medications like fluconazole or itraconazole may be prescribed.

  • In some cases, topical corticosteroids may be prescribed to reduce inflammation and itching associated with tinea versicolor.

  • Using a selenium sulfide shampoo on the affected areas may be effective, especially when the infection is present on the scalp.

    Tinea versicolor may also commonly present in those with seborrheic dermatitis

  • Sun protection and sunscreen will help more rapidly fade the discoloration

  • Avoid trigger such as excessive heat, humidity, and prolonged sweating
