LGBTQ+ Dermatology & Skin Health

Competent Population Health is a Priority

It's essential for healthcare providers, including dermatologists, to provide inclusive and culturally competent care to address the specific needs of LGBTQ+ patients.

Dapper Dermatology Approach

Dr. Swigost is passionate about improving the medical system and quality of care for LGBTQ+ patients. At Dapper Dermatology, we want our patients to feel respected and empowered. We understand looking at your healthcare in totality in order to create a plan that aligns with your goals.

Dr. Swigost is also committed to continuing advocacy on LGBTQ+ health issues. As someone who struggled with his own access to care, Dr. Swigost recognizes how important this issue is.

LGBTQ+ individuals can face higher rates of skin conditions or unique manifestations of dermatologic disease, but it's important to note that dermatological conditions are not inherently specific to sexual orientation or gender identity.

Common LGBTQ+ Dermatology Concerns

  • Acne is common in all patient populations. For cisgender and transgender patients, acne may be heightened due to testosterone supplementation, stress, medications, or cosmetic products. Topical therapies, isotretinoin (ie accutane), oral antibiotics, and certain supplements may be helpful.

  • Androgenic alopecia (most frequently termed male or female pattern hair loss) and hirsutism (unwanted hair growth) are also common in the setting of hormonal treatments.

  • It can be uncomfortable to discuss a skin concern in the genital or buttock areas. Dermatologists are trained to deal with skin on every surface of your body, and Dr. Swigost makes every effort to make patients feel comfortable and safe to discuss these issues.

One of the most common concerns is genital warts or other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Some common skin specific STDs include syphilis and herpes simplex virus (HSV).

  • Scarring can happen from skin conditions (e.g. acne), trauma, or surgery. Reducing the prevalence of scarring can help improve the quality of the skin in addition to improving self-confidence.

  • Even appearing skin can help patients look and feel their best, improving their mood, mental health, and confidence.

  • HIV-positive individuals may experience skin conditions such as rashes, infections, and psoriasis. Additionally, HIV medications may lead to specific skin rashes. Managing HIV and maintaining a healthy immune system can help prevent and alleviate dermatological issues.

  • Transgender individuals may be undergoing hormone therapy or gender-affirming surgeries. Dapper Dermatology recognizes the role we can play in making the healthcare system a more open and welcoming environment for our patients.

  • LGBTQ individuals may face higher rates of stress given societal structures, which can sometimes manifest in dermatological conditions like eczema or psoriasis. We take a holistic approach in our patient care.

  • Certain LGBTQ+ populations may be at higher risk for skin cancer due to factors like increased rates of smoking, substance use, less frequent use of sunscreen, or limited access to healthcare. Regular skin cancer screenings are important for early detection.

  • Some LGBTQ individuals may be interested in cosmetic dermatology procedures and skincare concerns, such as laser hair removal or injectable procedures. Our ultimate goal is to help you look and feel your best.
