Rosacea

Symptoms

Characterized by blood vessel proliferation (i.e. telangiectasias), red bumps, and/or pustules, causing parts of the face to become red. In some cases, eye and skin sensitivity may occur.

What Is Rosacea?

Rosacea’s redness is a result of chronic skin inflammation with triggers including sun exposure, malassezia (a yeast that lives on our skin), and environmental factors such as pollutants, alcohol, and heat. It is most common in light-complected individuals of Northern European decent, though it can be seen in all skin types. The main types of rosacea are:

  • Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea: visible blood vessels

  • Papulopustular Rosacea: Rosacea characterized by red bumps

  • Phymatous Rosacea: Thickening of the skin, especially th enose

  • Ocular Rosacea: Redness and irritation of the eyes and the eyelids

Dapper Dermatology Approach

Rosacea often requires a multifaceted approach. Effective skincare is the first step, targeting the progression, texture, and redness. Identifying and avoiding triggers like sunlight, heat, and certain foods is crucial. Common recommendations include sunscreen, topical anti-inflammatories, antioxidants, and laser/light treatments. With guidance from a board-certified dermatologist, rosacea, although chronic, is manageable.
