Cysts and Cyst Surgery

What Are Cysts?

Cysts are benign growths originating from hair follicles. They are sac-like structures that gradually accumulate dead skin cells, causing them to enlarge over time. Removal of cysts typically requires outpatient surgery, where the lesion is excised and the area repaired with stitches under local anesthesia.

Various types of cysts exist, including sebaceous, pilar, pilonidal, and epidermoid cysts, each with distinct characteristics and origins.

When Should I Seek Evaluation?

  1. The cyst begins to grow rapidly or becomes painful.

  2. The cyst begins to impair function or bother you during the day

  3. It is unclear if your lesion is a cyst or a different lesion

Please note: We never recommend manipulating or self-treating these lesions at home. Seek expert care with a dermatologist .

Cyst removal is a simple outpatient procedure typically performed under local anesthesia. Factors such as skin type, age, and the extent of damage influence the surgical approach.

Procedure Overview

  • The majority of cysts are diagnosed through a clinical exam prior to surgery. Rarely, imaging tests (such as ultrasound or MRI), or a biopsy are needed to confirm the cyst.

  • Patients are encouraged to eat a light meal prior to surgery.

  • Local injectable anesthesia is used to make the procedure comfortable.

  • The cyst is carefully dissected from the surrounding tissues.

  • After cyst removal, the incision is closed using stitches or surgical staples.

The method of closure may depend on the size and location of the incision.

  • Stitches are left in place for 7-14 days.

Light physical activity is allowed in most instances, but specific instructions are provided at the time of the case.

We recommend against heavy lifting (>25 lbs), intense cardiovascular activity, and water-based activities.

  • The patient is given instructions on wound care, pain management, and any restrictions on activities.

We recommend cleaning the site with a gentle cleanser like Cetaphil and using thick ointments like vaseline or Cerave Healing Ointment to encourage wound healing and prevent infection.

Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor the healing process and remove stitches or staples.

  • While cyst removal is generally a low-risk procedure, complications can include infection, bleeding, scarring, or recurrence of the cyst.
