What Are Skin Tags?

Skin tags are benign growths that most commonly appear at sites of friction such as the neck, axillae and groin. They can also be more commonly seen in patients with diabetes or obesity. These lesions are not dangerous but can be a cosmetically bothersome or painful with activity.

When Should I Seek Evaluation?

Skin tags are extremely common but can be itchy, painful, and aesthetically bothersome. If you are noting new skin tags, we recommend consulting a board-certified dermatologist to confirm that the skin growth is only a skin tag and not something else. After confirming the correct diagnosis, we can remove options for removal.

Please note: We never recommend manipulating or self-treating these lesions at home or with a non-dermatologist. We have seen many patients attempt to self-remove spots that unfortunately later turned out to be more dangerous conditions and resulted in delayed diagnoses.

Procedure Overview

  • The most frequent ways to remove skin tags are 1) liquid nitrogen and 2) snip removal. Liquid nitrogen freezes the tags and they fall away a few days later. Snipping the lesions will lead to immediate removal.

  • There is a small risk of scarring and bruising depending on the method used. Typically, patients can return to their normal activities within 24 hours.
