Neuromodulators: Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®

What Are Neuromodulators?

Neuromodulators are botulinum toxins that inhibit communication between the nerves and muscles at the treatment site resulting in decreased muscle movement. Targeted treatments can smooth fine lines, decrease the appearance of wrinkles, and improve skin texture.

Botulinum toxin formulations approved in the U.S. include Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, Daxxify® and Jeuveau®.

What Can Neuromodulators Do?

Neuromodulators can improve wrinkles and skin texture, forehead and glabella lines, crows feet and peri-occular lines and hyperhidrosis of the hands, feet, and axilla or armpits. Masseter botox can improve TMJ, teeth grinding, and facial slimming. Jelly roll botox can support under eye improvements.

Neuromodulator FAQs

  • Neuromodulators typically three months depending on the dose and dilution. For male patients and those who are more physically active, neuromodulators may lose their efficacy more quickly.

  • Bruising and swelling are most common. Rarely, unwanted drooping or muscle weakening may result, though this is less likely when seeing an experienced board-certified dermatologist.

  • We recommend avoiding alcohol, aspirin, and fatty acid supplements, and other blood thinning items 48 hours prior to your appointment (do not discontinue blood thinners being used to prevent life threatening health problems or that are under the direction of your neurologist or cardiologist). After treatment, bruising and swelling are common. Unwanted drooping is a risk but less so when seeing an experienced board-certified dermatologist.
