Lipoma

What Is a Lipoma?

Lipomas are benign growths from overgrowth of the fat lobules in our body. While these lesions are not dangerous, they can be a cosmetically bothersome and, in some cases, cause discomfort. Lipoma excision is an outpatient surgery that involves removal of the lesion and repair with stitches under local anesthesia.

When Should I Seek Evaluation?

  1. The lipoma begins to grow rapidly or becomes painful.

  2. The lipoma begins to impair function or bother you during the day.

  3. It is unclear if your lesion is a lipoma or a different lesion.

Lipoma removal is a simple outpatient procedure typically performed under local anesthesia. Factors such as skin type, age, and the extent of damage influence the surgical approach.

Procedure Overview

  • The majority of lipomas are diagnosed through a clinical exam prior to surgery. Rarely, imaging tests (such as ultrasound or MRI), or a biopsy are needed.

  • Patients are encouraged to eat a light meal prior to surgery.

  • Local injectable anesthesia is used to make the procedure comfortable.

  • The lipoma is carefully dissected from the surrounding tissues.

  • The incision is closed using stitches or surgical staples.

The method of closure may depend on the size and location of the incision.

  • Stitches are left in place for 7-14 days.

Light physical activity is allowed in most instances, but specific instructions are provided at the time of the case.

We recommend against heavy lifting (>25 lbs), intense cardiovascular activity, and water-based activities.

  • The patient is given instructions on wound care, pain management, and any restrictions on activities.

We recommend cleaning the site with a gentle cleanser like Cetaphil and using thick ointments like vaseline or Cerave Healing Ointment to encourage wound healing and prevent infection.

Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor the healing process and remove stitches or staples.

  • While lipoma removal is generally a low-risk procedure, complications can include infection, bleeding, scarring, or recurrence of the lipoma.
