Skin Cancer Surgery

What is Skin Cancer?

There are many types of skin cancers, but the three most common are: basal cell skin cancer, squamous cell skin cancer, and melanoma. Additionally, some atypical lesions (which are not technically cancer but may be of higher concern), may necessitate surgical treatment.

Skin Cancer Screen Exams

Your board-certified dermatologist is an important partner in your skin’s health. We want to focus on prevention and early detection to prevent longterm negative impacts from suspicious lesions. Dr. Swigost is an expert in dermatologic surgery, having performed over 1000 cases to date. We prioritize a safe, effective, and efficient surgical process.

Skin cancer excisions are an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia. Factors such as skin type, age, and the extent of damage influence the surgical approach.

Procedure Overview

  • Patients are encouraged to eat a light meal prior to surgery.

  • Local injectable anesthesia is used to make the procedure comfortable.

  • The lesion is carefully removed from the surrounding tissues.

  • The incision is closed using stitches or surgical staples.

The method of closure may depend on the size and location of the incision.

  • Stitches are left in place for 7-14 days.

Light physical activity is allowed in most instances but specific instructions are provided at the time of the case.

We recommend against heavy lifting (>25 lbs), intense cardiovascular activity, and water-based activities.

  • The patient is given instructions on wound care, pain management, and any restrictions on activities.

We recommend cleaning the site with a gentle cleanser like Cetaphil and using thick ointments like vaseline or Cerave Healing Ointment to encourage wound healing and prevent infection

Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor the healing process and remove stitches or staples.

  • While skin cancer surgery generally a low-risk procedure, complications can include infection, bleeding, scarring, or recurrence of the skin cancer.
